The MacBook of my dreams

I've been looking at buying a new MacBook for months. But no matter how long I stare at apple.com, it doesn't change the fact that Apple doesn't make a laptop that I want to buy. Right now, I have a 3 year old white MacBook with 4GB RAM, capacity for 6 GB. It's a Core 2 Duo (64 bit) and runs Lion. It runs well so if I'm gonna spend up to $2500 on a new machine, it better be a significant leap forward.

Here are some examples of what I'd like to buy:
  • A 13" MacBook Pro with discrete graphics and a higher resolution display (like the MacBook Air display)
  • A 13" MacBook Air with greater than 4GB RAM capacity
  • A 15" MacBook Pro that won't inflict a shoulder injury
Alternative ideas I'm considering:
  • A 13" MacBook Pro plus a Thunderbolt display
  • A 15" MacBook Pro with the 1680x1050 display and I'll just deal with carrying it
  • A 13" MacBook Air for coding on the go plus an iMac at home for the big computing needs.
  • Waiting for the next round of laptops.

I'd love to hear suggestions. Am I missing something?

I'll put in my vote for the MBA/iMac combo which is what I use. The MBA has excellent portability and battery life and will handle anything but the most extreme computing tasks. The only thing I've it fall short on are running VM's and some video/graphics programming.

Since you can push everything to the cloud, it's easy to make the two machines work together seamlessly.

I've always had a laptop and external monitor at home and I think that's a great way to go. However, this year when the new iMacs came out I decided to go for a top of the line 27" with an SSD. It was expensive, but I think it will last a lot longer for the money and so far I'm really glad I did it — it's amazingly fast.

I had been really wanting a 27" display, but looking at the options the high end laptops cost a lot and devalue so quickly, so I thought it would be a better investment to get an iMac that would last longer as a work machine and be okay with having lower-end/older hardware in a laptop.

You can get more ram for your buck in an iMac - 4 gigs that it comes with + 8 in the empty slots for < $100 more. The other thing that pushed me over the top on that is I think it will have a lot of utility as a home/family computer after it's "outdated" — even just as an external monitor.

Syncing hasn't been a big problem for me, but it's not ideal. Overall I'm happy with the decision, we'll see how I feel about it in a few years :)

If I didn't have it now I might buy an iMac when they get updated again, but if they release a new MacBook Airish MacBook Pro that would look pretty good to me too...

My vote is also for the iMac/MBA combo. I already have the iMac, and I'm holding out for the next round of laptops because I think the 15" air will be introduced with (hopefully) an 8 GB memory capacity.
